Poems: The Wave Being and Becoming

This week I shared two poems about waves and self awareness. As we entered the week of July 4th 2025, the consideration of freedom arises- especially during these times. Our body is mostly water, as we ponder movement of water and self reflection, may we deepen our inner and outer freedom.

”Every human has four endowments- self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom….The power to choose, to respond, to change.” Stephen Covey

The wave

Where are you on the wave?

Summer is here

the peak

And then the collapse

dropping downward

Granddaughters

hand holds her sisters’

Great Grandmother’s voice fades as her spirit evolves

The cycle of life lives in each wave

each moment or event

in each lifetime and in each breath

What if we savored each phase

what if we helped ourselves and each other through

each moment

of the wave of life

of breath

honoring what is born

and what is no longer

here

an active

present

whittling

of truth, like the carving of a stone

listening to discover

what lives underneath

if we care

as we honor

if we learn

each time

A New Way: Becoming the Wave

“Release”

the ocean says

and those who listen

become the wave

gliding at first

gathering

forces align to serve and lift

strength behind the form

moving forward

gliding

And some discover

a lift so high

that a crash occurs

rolling into white foam

dissipating into a bath of smoothness

that the metamorphic sea

provides

or at times the wave is gentle

flowing with a ripple

landing along the shore

gently bathing the ankles

of seabirds, seeking morning nourishment

large beaks piercing

the wet sand
